I have been contacted by UP employees whose personal identifiable information has been stolen.  I have some information which you may find helpful.

Uner the FACTA Act of 2004, identity theft victims have some powerful tools to protect themselves.  First, you should notify the big three credit reporting agencies that you have been the victim of ID theft.  The credit agencies must then put a big fat "ID Theft Victim" on your credit reports.  This means that anyone seeking to open a credit account under your name will have to prove that they are really you.

You should also monitor your credit reports. You should stagger your requests so that you are requesting their one free one from Equifax, then four months later from Experian, then four months later from Transunion.  If something shows up, dispute it with the credit reporting agency, who will send out a request to reinvestigate from the furnisher of information.  If you then explain that you are the victim of identity theft via the UP laptop, and that the account is not yours, and provide a telphone number for the furnisher to contact to verify that story, the furnisher will most likely delete it.  If not, you may have a claim under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
